Allina Health medical professionals are ready to provide high-quality health care to thousands of patients as the Minnesota Nurses Association threatens to walk away from care in an open-ended strike set to begin at 7 a.m. on September 5th at five Allina Health hospitals.

“Allina Health makes a promise to the communities we serve, and we are absolutely prepared

to fulfill that promise come 7 a.m. Monday,” said Dr. Penny Wheeler, Allina Health president and chief executive officer. “We have a responsibility to continue delivering high-quality care for the patients and communities who rely on us every minute of every day. And we are fully ready to do so.”

Approximately 1,500 highly skilled and experienced temporary nurses will work alongside Allina Health’s regular physicians, therapists, nursing assistants and other caregivers at Abbott Northwestern, Mercy, United and Unity hospitals and the Phillips Eye Institute. About half of the temporary nurses also staffed the facilities during the union’s previous strike in June, and many will be assigned to the same areas they worked before.

Allina Health plans to operate the affected hospitals at normal capacity during the strike and patients should access the hospitals as they would normally. All emergency departments will be open and fully operational. If there is any need to make a change to a previously scheduled procedure, affected patients will be contacted. Allina Health clinics and urgent care sites are unaffected by this strike and will be operating as normal.

“Allina Health makes a commitment to our communities to provide excellent care every day,” added Dr. Wheeler. “The care provided during the strike in June met that standard and the community can count on us continuing to meet our high standards once again during this strike.”
