COVID-19: Surveillance strategy
Aotearoa New Zealand’s COVID-19 Surveillance Strategy sets out the overall approach to public health surveillance of COVID-19 in New Zealand.
Aotearoa New Zealand’s COVID-19 Surveillance Strategy is a comprehensive framework that describes Aotearoa New Zealand’s approach to public health surveillance for COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19). The surveillance strategy describes:
- the five key objectives
- specific surveillance questions to address each objective and
- surveillance activities needed to provide the information and knowledge required to achieve the Aotearoa New Zealand’s goal of eliminating COVID-19.
The goal of the surveillance strategy
To achieve our elimination goal we need comprehensive surveillance that collects, collates and analyses data on COVID-19 and the effectiveness of the public health response.
The overall goal of COVID-19 surveillance is to monitor, evaluate and inform the equitable delivery of Aotearoa New Zealand’s COVID-19 Elimination Strategy.
Effective implementation of COVID-19 surveillance ensures that decision makers will have timely access to information and evidence. This is generated from a complex and ever-changing data environment. The creation and development of surveillance systems is an ongoing conversation with the sector and experts about:
- what information is needed to provide for decision making
- what should be measured and how data can be collected.
